Dear Memphis,

I still hate your Walgreens on Cleveland. Yes, there are others but I live near THIS one and I'm sick. I would please remind you to evacuate all of your crazy people from the area when I need to get cold medicine. On more than one occasion I have been accosted by aggressive pan-handlers and other various riff-raff who are not at all shy about putting their hands on your door to prevent you from closing it until you give them money. This time, however, I thought I was in the clear as I managed to enter and exit with purchased cold medication and did not have to talk to anyone. (The resident bum this day was working the other end of the parking lot at the time I came through.) You have neglected to consider the sidewalks around your establishment as while i was exiting the parking lot a woman crossing the way first not only flashed some sort of "devil" sign at me but then flipped me off and then spit on my car. For what reason, I am at a complete loss since I had neither seen her before nor was I edging her out of the way. She was somewhat well dressed and decidedly clean and since I was taking notice of her fingers at the time, noticed they were well manicured and freshly painted.

All this does is to reaffirm my desire to never visit your Walgreens establishment again. Probably any Walgreens in Memphis to keep it simple. I once tried to shop at the one on Union and I will never forget that experience.

So thank you, Memphis, for reminding me once again why it was I wanted to live on a farm in Ireland and raise sheep. At least the only one crazy for 30 miles would be me.

Sincerely,
Caroline

Death of the Monday Morning Express

How Many Tums is Too Many Tums?
Apparently it's 10. Who knew?

All hail the death of the Monday Morning Express! I'm sure you're just heartbroken. They started blocking LJ here at work and are systematically hunting through pretty much anything with the word "journal" or "blog" in the title and blocking it as well. Facebook and MySpace have been a member of the badlands since even before I started there. Soooo, this means no more MME.

Also, probably no more Who Review. Maybe on the weekend. Maybe.

But with the cutoff of my artistic outlet (which, come on - admit it, my poems are award worthy, right?) I've turned to comics and have a short series of fairly amusing comics about a fuzzy orange sprite torturing a former co-worker current friend of mine for mouthing off (which he does with ease and frequency). At some point I will share them all but for now they are on my work compy and Flickr is also blocked. (surprised? didn't think so.)

Our paper was finaly submittied today on which I am co-first author (yippie!!!) fingers crossed that we don't have to do any more work. I can't handle the all nighters and the weekends at work anymore. In fact....

I'm excited for MidSouthCon next weekend. Rachel is coming down on Friday and we get to totally dork out the whole weekend with costumes and junkfood. I am steampunking out my Victorian dress which I hope is going to be awesome and there will be some sort of fairy-thing at some point. There will be pictures.

Anyway, that's what's the up.

Ok, just asking.

I have some holiday leftovers to heat up in the virtual microwave.
I usually really hate dreaming about work on the weekends. Particularly Sunday night. But this time was kinda cool. It was "surreal work". There was this new guy starting that day and I hadn't met him yet but everyone kept talking about him. Finally, when I did get to meet him, I thought he looked familiar but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Then my boss said his name was Sebastian and the whole creepy surreal work world started swirling around. It was weird because he was my subconscious' human interpretation of a character from my pen trilogy. It was at that moment that I realized the strange creepy familiarity I saw in him was because I created him. A whole fully-fleshed reactive human that never existed. I find that kinda awesome.

I pulled out my cello this weekend as well. If not for one string the bridge would have been in the bottom of the bag. But damn if I didn't have that thing tuned plucked and playing sweet sweet music in less than 10 minutes. I still got it. Oh yeah.

I'm already registered for MidSouthCon next year! (Yay) Need a couple of people to share a room. Anyone? Bueller? Damn you.

Undenied

Marked for death
by a poisoned pen
A gravestone etched
with dates not met
Fate is sealed
in an airtight tomb
The days of your life
written silent by loom

Let not these shadows
keep you in place
Spill the ink
crack the stone
Declare your time
and your space
When it's done
own your fate
With one thing
left to do
Set fire to the tapestry
woven for you.

I need some motivation to apply for school.
Yes, they had tickets and yes, I went. Lots of people must have bought tickets on Friday afternoon because the place was totally sold out today. If last time was a mixed bag today was like... a bag of mixed nuts. The kind with the coconut shreds and those little dried bits of fruit. Lots of little girls with their parents which I expected and a couple of retired people just tearing it up. Tonight's theme of dress was stripes. Which is funny since on Thursday Billy Corgan wore black and white stripes while the audience was decked in all black with hoodies while tonight the bands were in hoodies and the crowd wore stripes.

Four bands this time. We started with Cute Is What We Aim For who I've never heard of before. I didn't even catch their name when they said it out loud. I had to ask the guy next to me and even HE didn't know. I barely remember their set. I blame it on the tired. Watch, tomorrow I'll be humming some of their tunes and I won't even know it. I just remember they weren't bad. No one was bad tonight.

Plain White T's was next!! They played Delilah and This Is Our Time Now and I was grateful for them. Pretty good live band. I liked some of their other stuff but I don't remember much of it. They seemed really happy to be out on tour.

Next out was Gym Class Heroes which had a decidedly tougher edge than the rest of the bands tonight. They opened with a song I recognized but that was the only one. They threw a LOT of things into the audience. It seemed after every song the lead singer would throw his sweat rag into the audience. Then during a song about things you really can only do with your clothes off he started taking off his clothes. I think he got through both socks and shoes. They all went into the audience. They had a mascot which was fun. After their set was done and the roadies started setting up the stage for Fall Out Boy a couple of the band members and the mascot came out into the audience which I'm sure made everyone's day in that corner of the theater. There were a few officers breaking up the crowd.

Then finally out came Fall Out Boy. They played everything I could possibly associate with them. Name it, they probably played it. They even did three encores. A few things about their style of live performance: One, this is not the 80's and you will never be a hair band so please ditch the flaming pyrotechnics. The sparklers however were extremely cool and should be used much more frequently. Two, how HOW HOW on earth can someone run around on stage jumping and twirling in the air while still playing your guitar, land on both feet and not break your neck, fleshy or guitar related? I ask you. I wonder how many guitar related fatalities they went through in the past. They did some moves that would put the New York Ballet Company to shame. All of them had cordless guitars so they could have free range of motion and they took every advantage of it.

I'm sure that if I had gone out to Beale tonight I would have run into a handful or two of band members but I have to finish making my wings for the halloween party tomorrow and my deviled eyeballs. In an effort to sleep in too.

Again, no swag but here's me with my printed ticket looking angry because I couldn't get the ticket in the same picture and the good shots of myself.

I know there are alot of people who take very nice pictures of themselves and post them on their journals... how many do you have to take before you get one you are happy with? If you say one I know you're lying.

Again I sat next to a strange guy. This one had the unique and pleasing audacity to look exactly like Owen Harper. Much like the time I saw "Mason" I was a little taken aback. I would have been in eye candy heaven in both cases if neither of them had ever opened their mouths. In place of what you expect of a rich english burr you end up with something akin to watching an interview of David Beckham with the sound up for the first time. This guy wasn't as bad as "Mason" but the southern twang just ruins it all for me. Still "Owen" and I had some nice conversation and I hope we cross paths again some day.

Wings, then eyes, then bed. Quickly as possible.

The Pumpkins have been thouroughly Smashed.

    <lj:music>Do I really have to say it?</lj:music>

The Smashing Pumpkins were actually here. In Memphis. Tonight err.. last night. Whatever. I was fortunate enough to be not completely out of the loop to have actually gone to see them. The crowd was a mixed bag of new fans and old fans. Now, I know that these guys have been around since the early 90's and many of their early fans will be well into their middle-agedness but I hope that I never ever never find myself at a concert in belted high-waisted khakis and a polo shirt. Tucked in. I have standards! Other than that fashion catastrophe the general theme of the audience was if it's black and it has a hood: wear it. I fit RIGHT in. :)

Outdoor concerts are a gamble here. Five days ago it was sunny and 85 today it was 50 at best. And raining. Lots of rain. Rain rain rain rain. Rain which stopped only moments before the opening of the gates to the amphitheater. So, fortunately it only drizzled for a little while during the festivities. On the flip side, I was freezing my ass off! I still can't get my feet warm.

The show opend with Explosions In The Sky (the band, not litterally). They were freaking AWESOME! No lyrics in their set, they actually only had one standing microphone and it was at the front of the stage. They only used it to introduce themselves. Their sound was like.... well. Hmm. If you took the best bits of a song which are usually the opening chords and the guitar solo during the bridge and actually made a whole song with just those melodic tidlybits thats kinda what they sounded like. Or, or.... incidental background music in really good scenes of a movie. Twas amazing. They broke their songs up with guitar distortions and long held notes but after about 20 minutes I heard the dumbasses behind me commenting on how this was definitely the longest song they had ever heard before. Someone wasn't paying attention. I also suspect a few people were high. Their sweeping melodic edgy wordless rock makes me want to go out and get their album. I will add it to the list of disks I still have yet to buy.

After them the Pumpkins made us wait for nearly an hour! Cheeky. I spent that time getting to know my neighbor. I'd like to tell you his name but I don't know it. We were anonymous. Just the way I like it. Pumpkins came out Billy Corgan in what can only be described as the outfit previously owned by Little Boy Blue from the land of twisted fairytales. And it had the stripes which I am so very fond of.

They rocked. They sang some new stuff, they sang some old stuff. They did not play Disarm or Perfect. They DID play To Sheila which has a special place in my head and it totally made the whole show for me. What made the frozen appendages bearable was the adorable flub during 1979 which he completely massacred. About half way through he started singing the second verse then stopped said "sorry" started the right verse again, sang a line, said "it's too fucking cold!" sang another line messed up the chords, stopped entirely and explained "when I wrote this song I didn't expect I'd have to play it in the North Pole!" everyone laughed and he went on with it. Yay! I like it when things don't always go perfectly. They ended up only doing one song for encore and I was really hoping to hear Disarm but, alas.

Didn't get any swag this time. Have to settle for just the ticket and everything that my eyes did see.

According to the dude next to me they haven't played in Memphis since 1998 and wondered why they were back now. I figured that since they were doing VoodooFest in NOLA on Saturday we were just sort of on their way. I fondly remember last years Voodoo Fest. I never went to it but I won't ever forget it...

Weekday concerts suck in general because you have to work all day and then again the next day so there just isn't as much energy in it. Fall Out Boy and Plain White T's are at Mud Island this Saturday. If they still have tickets tomorrow I will probably be going to that one as well.

I am delirious.. DELIRIOUSI say! But I will try to hold it together for just a little while longer. 26 minutes to be exact. Well, maybe a little longer so I can drive home and not crash.

So many new things... on TV.

Among them, the awesomely shown but terribly named Moonlight. Who didn't see alot of Angel in this show? You must be BLIND. Let me recall a few of my favorites. The fast cutting night city scenes, alot like Angel. The cheezy voice over with a brooding trench coat wearing vampire atop a building, at night. Did anyone happen to catch the pilot for Angel. Yeah, just like that. Lets get a little more specific shall we? Hmm.. too hot to handle vampire denying himself the "touch" of another for some 80 long years? A private detective (without the crossover baggage, of course) who not only is in love with a blonde chick but she also looks incredibly similar to the blonde cop that helped Angel in his first season except this one is an investigative reporter. He's got a psycho ex who may or may not be dead who actually turned him much like Darla did except this one looked like Drusilla. Eh, two for one I guess. And last but not least, ties with an evil CEO who he's against in conscience but still friends with.

I did however still love it and it satisfies my Vampire fix quite nicely. Especially since Angel is caput.

Ok enough of this drivel. On to the show!

Crazy Eighths

A tirade for
a broken mind.
Restless thoughts
on a pointless ride.
Decisions to be
cast in stone.
A blue-green sphere
or a lonely home.
Time is seems
winds steady past.
Broken hearts will hide
in the wind swept grass.

Still waitin' on that Halloween news.... *ahem*

Though, sometimes it makes its way into the bedroom.

Why all this work? Harry Potter 7 arrives on Saturday. I can't welcome the prodigal tome into a dirty house!

Today's VBP(Very Bad Poem) is not so much a poem as it is a little song. I have a challenge for anyone who would take it.(which is probably no one) Take the words, I won't tell you what the tune sounds like, make your own tune and record it (a capella or with your handy dandy instruments) then send it to me. It can be as beautiful or beastly as you could possibly want it. While she has her favorites, she constantly wants more and usually connives to get someone (read: her grandparents) into procuring a new one every couple of weeks. The new one immediately becomes her favorite and she must sleep with it every night and haul it around half the day. My question is: Does this behavior indicate she'll be overly promiscuous as an adult, or at least unable to commit to a single partner?

—Perhaps Overly Worried Father

Dear Perhaps,
Of course that's what it indicates. You'd better start thinking now about what you're going to do when she's a young woman and throws over that big, chubby guy with the annoying laugh, Barney, for the sexually ambiguous Tinky-Winky, whom she then dumps for that moron, Elmo, who every time they come over asks you to get down on the floor and tickle him.

—Prudie

Enter Martha Jones, medical student, who examines our fine Doctor and is confused by his dual heartbeat. Suddenly the hospital grooves and shakes and they end up on…. The moon. Surrounded by a protective bubble they are invaded by some intergalactic police searching for a fugitive they believe is in the hospital. They catalogue the entire place and with the help of the Doctor and Ms. Jones they identify and eliminate the threat after some accusation of both the Doctor and Martha of being said alien threat. They’re put back on earth just before the oxygen depletion kills them all and Martha is off partying straight away while the Doctor goes shopping. And yes, he does come back for her.

So why did Martha kick so much ass? I think I will like her. The Doctor seemed impressed by her too. She’s definitely a change of pace from Rose who was a lot more naïve.

Things I was delighted by then disappointed by:

- The doctor was dressed pretty much the same BUT he had a different color suit (it was blue) and a different color of Chucks on (Red! Yay!). But then he did a silly dance to rid himself of some gamma radiation and ended up throwing his shoes in a radioactive waste bin. Sadness at the loss of the red Chucks.

Ok that was just “thing”.

The intergalactic police full-on reminded me of BeeBop and RockSteady from TMNT back in the day. I more than half expect to see an actual TMNT at some point this season. Just as an in-joke.

Oh! And… when Martha met the Doctor she had already seen him earlier that morning (which turned out to be him from the future coming back into the past to prove that he did own a time machine.) and she asked him if he had a brother. He screwed up his face and quietly said “No, not any more.” Bwah! Did he have a brother? What about those looms?? I really need to watch those old episodes. I think I might have a few waiting in my mailbox.

So, on a fangirl tangent the Doctor totally destroyed his sonic screwdriver in order to save everyone. I was a little shocked but then relieved to see he’d gotten a new one by the end. It needed to be field tested so he decided to take Martha along with him. This is where the Doctor makes his greatest mistakes. So, earlier in the episode he kissed her. He first told her “this doesn’t mean anything” then kissed her. It was obvious that it didn’t matter what he’d said, he’d still done it and she liked it. He did it so that the inspectors would pick up his alien DNA and waste some time double checking her out while he set up to save the world. Were I her I would have thought back on the whole reasoning and decided he could have easily just rubbed his hands on her face or I dunno, licked her forehead or something a little less enticing while still being intimate and DNA passage-y.

Anyway this brought her to conclude that 1. the Doctor shows up in a tight suit. 2. Plants a kiss on her. 3. Saves the world. And finally 4. Makes up an excuse to come back and ask her out on a date. Which she tells him all of this and he denies flat out causing her to look a little let down. But in the grander picture she has thus far been pretty astute about the goings on with our friendly neighborhood Doctor. She might not be far off. If he didn’t want his assistants thinking they could get him into bed then maybe he shouldn’t make such a scene, eh, and chose someone a little less close to home. I bet he likes it. It makes him feel gooey in dark places.

In any event it was nice to see the sonic screwdriver up close and personal so often. It really does look exactly like the one I got. Punch ain’t got nothin’ on me.

And who is this Saxon fellow, he's been mentioned three times in two episodes. I'm begining to wonder...

I hear that next week has a bit of Shakespeare in it. I’m looking forward. Well, I say next week but really I mean tomorrow. We’ll see how their “first date” goes.

Please, don't ever leave any comments or theories. That would just be terrible. Completely uncalled for.

The Fray

<lj:music>Over My Head by The Fray</lj:music>

Music was had this evening. I went and saw The Fray. They had not one but TWO opening bands. The first was Eisley who were frankly the best of the three and the scale-tipping reason for me shelling out the cash to get tickets. Did you know: 4 of the 5 are sisters and brother, the 5th is their cousin. Nice little family business. They sounded amazing. I'm getting those albums. I've had Telescope Eyes on my iPod since it came out, though they didn't play it I still enjoyed their set.

Next came out Gomez who were also very great. I suspect that the singer guy is not only from England but quite possibly from somewhere very close to if not actually Liverpool. And if you have to ask me how I can tell then you just really don't know me much at all...

The Fray themselves were good. First band I've ever seen that invited like 30 fans on stage to help them sing a song. They involved the audience a lot actually. It was fun. I wanted one of those polaroids they threw into the audience but I was right on the outer edge of the theater so nothing even came close to me. At one point they all got very close to the piano and sang a soft little song together. Then they chatted for a while and started singing "Hips Don't Lie" it was hilarious! Imagine the most straight-faced whiteboy version of that song then listen to it. Ha!

I did end up with some swag though...

From nowwhat.com I got a "concert survival kit" which had sunscreen, a rain poncho, tissues, earplugs and breath drops in a nice little drawstring bag. I didn't actually need any of it but if it had rained like it was supposed to I would have been extremely happy to have it. There were also competing radio stations trying to outdo one another by handing out paper fans. Personally, I like the red one better.

I recommend long sleeves to the Mud Island Amphitheater regardless of how hot it is. The mosquitoes are just terrible. 'Course seeing as how Mud Island is pretty much a silty burm dangling into the Mississippi like a flaccid penis its just a breeding ground for those types of things.

A goode and funnie episode. Easily a one-off but it also fit in quite nicely with the flow of the rest of the episodes.

First of all, she wasn’t really a runaway now was she? This is only the first of many many misleading events that occurred in this episode. I didn’t really like Donna, in that good way. You felt sorry for her in the end and she was funny but I wouldn’t want to be her friend. Way too much work. It actually kind of surprised me in the end when the Doctor asked her to come with him, I didn’t think he really liked her all that much either. They played off of each other well and she certainly is a verbal match for him.

Oddly enough she was a lot like me.

Quite possibly my favorite line: My God you’re skinny. A rat couldn’t fit in this.

Lessee.. what else was misleading. Well first off, you are led to believe.. well ok she blatantly lies about who asked whom to marry them, which was actually one of the funnier moments to show the truth while she’s telling lies over the montage. Tee hee. Then her fiancé who you think is a coward and running away ends up appearing to save them all by sneaking back in the back way to kill the horrible monster only to THEN be actually in league with it! Talk about a twisty twist. Then he was really mean. Which therein is another mislead as he agreed to marry her just so she wouldn’t go anywhere while he was slowly poisoning her for his monsters sake. Then, of course, the monster turns on him and decides he was too heartless to the poor girl and feeds him to her childrens. This monster, by the way is a giant spider woman. Ick with buckts of icky ick on the side. The final and possibly most confusing mislead is the Doctor telling Donna that he “lost” his friend (he was referring to Rose) which made her and pretty much everyone else think he meant she died (which Rose does consider it herself that she died as that’s what she says when she does the voiceover for both the two final episodes of the second season but she didn’t actually. Plus she’s got her dad and a whole family etc. etc.. I’ve made my rant before.). But then later he explains that Rose is so very much alive when he insists Donna trust him and she naturally doesn’t at first. A little weird seeing as though less than an hour before this he was talking to her via projection to her dimension. Anyway…

The Doctor went to a dark place, which I always love. Apparently the Time Lords all but wiped out these Racnoids (or whatever) and she was the last one, except for her children buried deep inside the earth. So a deeply disturbed Doctor fights the queen with her own bombs while outside a pretty peeved off London fire bombs her spaceship that’s trying to destroy the city. It was nice to see the regular government firing the tanks and not Torchwood with their sonic laser beams. Of course, Torchwood got the royal smack down from both the Doctor and another dimension full of vigilantes. They’ll probably hobble back into life eventually but it was just too soon to regroup. Especially since the majority of their workforce was converted into Cybermen and/or killed by Daleks. It was a spectacular finale. You should have seen it.

Poor little Doctor misses Rose. Donna found her shirt (That purple one from New Earth) on the bridge and accused him of kidnapping. My question is…. Why was her shirt draped over a hand railing on the bridge? Did she often go naked about the Tardis? And don’t tell me the laundry machine is located under the floor panels.

I wonder too if the Doctor isn’t getting a little sentimental in his old age. I wonder if by 1000 he’ll be practically human.

So, cool stuff to know and love about this episode:

-We got to see the formation of the earth. Scary that the first stone of the earth was a Racnoid webship.

- Flashbacks of Rose AND a little bit of background information that sort of explained what was happening to Rose after she absorbed the innards of the Tardis at the end of Season one and why the Doctor died after taking it from her. AND explains a little bit about the Tardis itself.

- The Tardis hurtling down the freeway in a high speed chase. That was just funny.

- The complete and entire draining of the Thames. Completely improbable but still amusing.

Cheesiness we can’t ignore:

-Plastic santas are back. Oh joy.

- Christmas ball hand grenades….

- A webship that looked incredibly like the North Star… “Look ma, It’s Christmas.”

That’s all I can remember of this one. I also thought it was funny that Donna was conveniently either out of the country or under the water when all the funky stuff of the last two years was going on. Probably the only person in the world who was completely clueless…

You won’t have to wait long… “Smith and Jones” aired on the same night, that would be the first official episode of the third season.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled lives.

<lj:music>"Make This Go On Forever" by Snow Patrol</lj:music>

I woke up this morning deeply confused about where I was sleeping. First of all it was the butt crack of dawn and secondly there were no furry mammals mewing at me for food. Then it occurred to me I had to go to work and it depressed me. 4.5 more hours and I can then go home.

It was great and sunny and blue in Seattle which really only happens about 10 days out of the year. I was there for 8 of them. I had an awesome time hanging with Midget (that's mistymarshalland bridget_coila) and they even let me mooch off of them at the weekends.

There was that high school reunion thing too. My graduating class was a lot larger than most of my other friends graduating classes but still only 30 people showed up. And I'm pretty sure some of those were spouses too. It was still nice to see those 30.

I missed last week. I was otherwise sleeping. So, I'm terribly sorry if you had nothing to compare your week to. I suppose you could combine the two weeks and compare them together. That way if one was really good and one was really bad it averages to... well, average. Duh.

Unsaid

I saw you there
Even long before.
You found in me
An open door.
I wasn't thinking
When I walked away.
The things unsaid
I regret today.

More important than water is that Doctor Who was on for 2 and a half hours Friday. I watched them twice (Yay for DVR) and you can certainly expect some reviews soonish.
